Kosiv is a picturesque town in Hutsulshchyna - the land of high mountains, torrents and fresh air. Here during more than 600 years people used to live under foreign rule. However they managed to conserve their language, traditions, and art. People, who rebelled against enemies were called Opryshky. Their leader was Oleksa Dovbush. Now almost everybody knows who he was. Oleksa Dovbush  is a Ukrainian version of the famous Robin Hood character.

More about Kosiv:
Kosiv is a little town in the Carpathians, not far from Kolomyia. It is famous for its outstanding artists, that not only create beautiful things, but also keep national traditions in embroidery, ceramics, weaving, forging, making wooden, linen and woolen things, pysankas* (see the Glossary)… Kosiv region is really rich in talents – there is such an artist almost in every house. Many of them studied at the institute or the high school of the applied arts in Kosiv. This town could be called the capital of pysankas – people come from all over the world just to have a look at these masterpieces. This admiration of pysanka is the reason why there is a unique monument in the center of the town – a monument to an egg. Nowhere else will you see anything of the kind, so it’s advisable that you not omit it. Probably you would like to know, where you could see the works of Kosiv artists. First of all go to the museum. You will not only see legendary things of everyday use, made like pieces of art, but also learn something from their history, hear interesting stories about the inner sense, which is put into them. These symbols, these ornaments were being created during centuries, so their colors, lines – everything – have ancient roots and bear special meanings. The way sorochka* or rushnyk* is embroidered, colors and ornaments that are used, may often have some positive or negative influence on a person that uses them and this person’s fate. The things you can see in the institute are of not less interest. These are the best works of its students and those who’ve already finished it. There are some shops in the center of the town, where some souvenirs, embroidery, pysankas, works of straw and wood are sol Where else, if not here, you can buy drymba* – the musical instrument, which is typical for the land of hutsuls*. Don’t forget to visit the market as well. This gives you an excellent opportunity to see and buy the widest range of the most interesting works of Kosiv masters. Embroidered sorochkas and rushnyks, skirts, other items of clothes; postoly*; a lot of things made of beads, wood, leather, stones – different kinds of necklace, gerdanas*, bracelets, earrings etc; ceramics – beautifully painted dishes and statues; hobelens*, carpets… Turn your attention to the lizhnyks* of sheep wool. These are very warm and nice blankets that, besides this, have some curative effect – those who use them, get cured of rheumatisms, arthritis, heart diseases, they are good for skin, joints and nerves as well. The market is open twice a week: on Thursday (mostly souvenirs and pictures are on sale) and on Saturday (clothes, embroidery, lizhnyks, hobelens etc.) If you want to buy something really valuable, you would rather got up early in the morning – at 4 o’clock in the morning people begin to gather here and there are plenty of goods at 6-7 o’clock. At 9 o’clock some sellers already go home, and here is almost nobody at the market at 11-12 o’clock. When you will come to Kosiv you will inevitably get charmed with the picturesque and clean nature. People here live in harmony with the nature and don’t offend it. Kosiv stands on the river Gut [gu:t], so don’t miss the opportunity to see its wonderful waterfalls, rapids and banks. Water is very clean in the river, so it is possible to bathe in it too, if there is an appropriate weather. One more place not to omit is Mis’ka Hora (Town Hill). Though a rest base is now built here, he hill is still a paradise on earth. Kosiv was, is and will be a place to visit for everybody interested in ethnic roots of hutsuls or just involved with folk applied art and unbelievably beautiful and clean nature. The question that may interest the visitors of the town – where can they stay for night? The rest bases appear very quickly here. It’s understandable, considering such a great amount of coming tourists. The best of them, though not cheap, are “Legenda” (“The Legend”) and “Baika” (“The Parable”). If you are interested in a cheaper variant, choose a possibility to live with Kosiv people – many of them would like to invite you to spend time in their house for a moderate fee.
